Sheffield Utd vs Argyle – preview
By: Jim | October 31st, 2008Before we get started, seeing as everyone else has had their say on the Brand/Ross/Sachs affair, here’s mine. I don’t like Russell Brand or Jonathan Ross. I don’t like them at all. I think what they did was insulting, ungentlemanly, illegal and wrong. I welcome a period of respite from their tones on the airwaves and I think Andrew Sachs has behaved with graciousness and class. However, I still don’t see why that means the Controller of Radio 2 should resign, especially when you consider that most of the numpties responsible for real disasters like the credit crunch and the Iraq war remain happily in their jobs. Nor do I wish to live in a society where the boundaries of humour are decided by the readers of the Daily Mail, thanks very much. And I am bound to wonder why both the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition, the Minister for Justice et al, et al, have so much free time to be able to address this in their variously pompous and condescending ways. I’d have thought they had other, rather more pressing, problems to deal with right now.
Enough! Having got away with a characteristic Luggy smash-and-grab raid at Hillsborough on Tuesday, thanks to a typical Steve MacLean goal, Argyle get the chance to make it a hat-trick of Sheffield wins tomorrow at Bramall Lane. A difficult challenge by any standards: the Blades have a strong squad and will be challenging at least for play-off honours this year. A look at their forward line gives a good insight into just how strong they are: perm any two from Beattie, Henderson, Sharp, Stokes and Webber, with another two on the bench; add a midfield (even without Brian Howard) with the likes of David Carney, Lee Hendrie, Matty Spring, Stephen Quinn and David Cotterill and a defence of Kilgallon, Ehiogu, Morgan, Jihai, Halford – it’s a strong, strong squad.
Sturrock may well be tempted to freshen things up a little: Chris Clark looks like he could do with a rest and so, despite his MoM performance on Tuesday, could Luke Summerfield. That would allow (finally) Nicolas Marin to make a full debut and Simon Walton to continue his rehabilitation. Perhaps more controversially, Rory Fallon could return in place of Gallagher, who has looked increasingly leggy over the last couple of matches. Doumbe, Mpenza and Mackie will presumably still be hors de combat. Imagine then an Argyle squad something like:
Larrieu
McNamee
Seip
Cathcart
Barker
Marin
Walton
Duguid
Paterson
Fallon
MacLean
———————-
Gallagher
Summerfield
Noone
Clark
Timar
Any sort of result would surely be seen as a triumph for the Greens. A big shout-out to all those hardy souls making the trip up there – here’s hoping they see something to warm them up a bit.

Alright Jim, cheers for the comment! Ah you have to admit SEB’s a great player though? I do however beleive he’s going to do the same to us as he did to you in a season or two, I get the feeling he’s on a mission for the premiership at any cost, if we can’t firstly give it him, and then keep him there, he’s off. Wouldn’t suprise me in the least, he doesn’t seem like the kind of player that settles down?

He’s persistently been linked with Everton and at the rate he’s going I would expect one or two others to be in for him come January. Be surprised if you got less than £8 million for him in the current market.

I doubt Everton will shell out £8m for a striker at the moment – Bill Kenwright is trying to sell the club as he just doesn’t have the funds to compete with the richer clubs. I’m sure he won’t be short of suitors mind, but I’m gonna say he’ll fetch £6m and he’ll go to a (potential) yo-yo club like Stoke should they survive. And should Wolves not go up, of course.
Jim, I will be missing the Plymouth-Cardiff game as my trip to Florence has been booked. I’m hoping to find a bar that screens the game (yup, a typical Brit) however so I’m looking forward to not only seeing us continue our impeccable away form (unbeaten, still) but also having a look at your team and a few of your players! Particularly Cathcart, Gallagher and Marin to see how good they are, and then Barker, Walton and MacLean seeing as they are former Bluebirds. It’ll be interesting to see how Walton fares as he’ll be in for some catcalls and booing from the City travelling band!

He’ll stay with a yo-yo club, Wolves!
Wahey, but yeah, in all seriousness I think Everton have been linked with every single Championship player of any quality of the last 5 years, I personally think Moyes is scared of buying big names. If Blake does go, I think it’ll be to an established side, Villa could be a good shout? They love their English contigent.

It’s all gone a bit quiet here…

Glad to see you’re keeping an eye, Tobes!
The truth is, I’m halfway through a piece on refereeing, which I’m struggling to finish – work having taken a major upsurge (I do wish people would stop dying). But never fear, I will (honest guv!) be sticking something up for Martyn to get his teeth into for our upcoming encounter on Sky on Saturday. Stay tuned….
